Concussion Treatment
CIF State Information Regarding Concussions:
Nationwidedata continues to show that many catastrophic head injuries are a direct resultof injured athletes returning to play too soon, not having fully recovered fromthe first head injury. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control reportsthat approximately 3 million sports and recreational concussions occur everyyear.California law mandates that allcoaches must receive training on concussions. The training may be fulfilledthrough the free, online course available through the National Federation ofState High School Associations (NFHS). Additionally, California law mandatesthat all CIF member schools must comply with the following: On a yearly basis,a concussion and head injury information sheet shall be signed and returned bythe athlete and the athlete's parent or guardian before the athlete'sinitiating practice or competition.

Bylaw 313 A student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time for the remainder of the day. A student-athlete who has been removed from play may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion and receives written clearance to return to play from that health care provider.
