Proceeds to Benefit - TEAM to WIN
Rationale for Support: 30% of children in California
DO NOT have health insurance. TTW provides a FREE
sports medicine clinic for 22 TTW schools and 13,000 at risk, underserved,
inner city high school student athletes in the Los Angeles area.
Our Goal: To keep student athletes healthy and
safely participating in interscholastic sports. Many injuries are preventable.
Low income, at risk school age athletes lack access to comprehensive/
specialized sports medicine care. Team to Win provides
care to student athletes, regardless of their lack of insurance, type of
insurance or medical coverage.
Who
we are: West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation, founded in
1994, is a non-profit, 501 C 3 charitable organization (Tax ID # 95-4497009)
dedicated to providing economically deprived high school students with an opportunity
to participate in interscholastic sports and have access to quality sports
medicine care and services designed to improve health and ensure safety.
Participation in school-based sports encourages cooperation and understanding,
helps foster and build relationships, enhances equal opportunity and imparts
valuable lessons and life skills needed in life to be successful. At a time
when many of this country's high school students are at risk for many of the
negative influences of society, high school sports provide a valuable model for
social interaction and team building.
What
we provide: TTW provides a free sports medicine
clinic for 22 TTW schools and 13,000 at risk, underserved, inner city high
school student athletes. TTW also provides on-site certified athletic trainers.
It has been proven many times over that an on-site athletic trainer at the
high-school level reduces the occurrence of serious injuries by at least 30%.
Both students and student athletes participate in TTW. Team to Win also provides
a community based Student Athletic Trainer Mentoring Program where the student
is placed in a year round medical education program, and upon completion of the
intensive summer component of the program the student is ready to assist the on
site athletic trainer in the care of student athletes. This program not only
supports and nurtures the athletic endeavors of its students, but it also
encourages scholarly achievement and community involvement. Over 55% of the
youth served in this program live at or below the poverty line.
Our
Mission: The mission of the West Coast Sports
Medicine Foundation is to provide a positive effect on the lives of the youth
it serves. Participation in interscholastic sports promotes teamwork and a
healthy lifestyle, encourages cooperation and understanding, helps foster and
build relationships, enhances equal opportunity and teaches valuable lessons
and life skills needed to survive and succeed. Through organized athletic
participation, students learn how to set goals and meet challenges. These
students are less likely to use drugs or join a gang and more likely to
graduate from high school and pursue higher education.
As the public school system in California continues
to suffer cutbacks, Team to Win and the mission of the WCSMF is even more
critical. Team to Win is more important today to
families who cannot afford medical insurance, and to High Schools who cannot
afford On Site Sports Medicine Care.
How
you can Help: In order to
maintain the 22 schools and 13,000 student athletes we serve we must raise
funds to support our efforts out in the community. Your support of the WCSMF
will bring us closer to our goal and allow us to continue to care for the
student athletes of Los Angeles. www.wcsportsmed.com
